On Monday 11 January 2010 several members of St John’s welcomed friends from Chew Moor, Bolton Rotary Daybreak Club and HF Walking Club who all braved the cold, snow and icy pavements to go to see ‘The Sound of Music’ at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. We wondered what the journey would be like – but we arrived safely.

We were transported into a different world of wonder, mountains, flowers, sunshine and wonderful music.  The replacement for Connie Fisher, Maria, sang with great enthusiasm and delight as did Captain Von Trapp.  The song ‘Climb Every Mountain’ was greeted with rapturous applause.  The children did very well with their drills to whistles and they sang their many songs enthusiastically.  The music in the Abbey was moving and the ballroom scene was very enjoyable.  It was a bit daunting to see two German officers with guns facing the audience in two boxes in the festival scene!! – but the family did get up that mountain to safety.

It was a real treat to hear all that wonderful music and each person seemed to put their heart and soul into the performance.

Many thanks must go to Derek and Joan Horner for making all the arrangements for such a lovely evening’s entertainment.
