Safe and Sound

This was the last meeting of our Messy Church – the team (above) is getting older and the children are getting fewer as they move on to secondary education. Nevertheless we had a great time out in the sunny garden and a theme befitting whatever we will all do next.

The theme, Safe and Sound is based on the stories Jesus told about the lost sheep and the lost coin. The shepherd and the woman who lost the coin search everywhere until they find what is lost. In other words everything is valuable and worth the effort to search. And so in whatever we do and whoever we are, we are valued by God and we must value everyone in return.

In the garden we did a hunt for 100 sheep bringing them safe and sound to the paddock. The children also¬† made a sheep pen out of rolled up newspapers to keep our special sheep, Jacob, safe. The children also painted pebbles with an image of a sheep and these were dried and lacquered so the children could take them home. In celebration of the safe return of the “lost”, everyone contributed to a painted “Welcome Home” banner containing a number of ingenious messages mainly to be understood by sheep. The children also coloured pictures of the welcoming arms of a family – they might also add family photos when they get home. In addition it turned out that the children also did an extra, secret, task that the Messy Church leaders were kept from.

The devotions retold the story of the lost sheep including an amusing video. At the end of the service we discovered that secret activity was to paint a wonderful “Thankyou” picture from all those who had enjoyed Messy Church. It was in the form of a tree which we will continue to remind us of the many children who have attended over 8 years.
