In this time of Lent leading up to the Easter story, Messy Church concentrated on the events in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus went to pray about what he knew was about to happen to him, but the disciples were exhausted and fell asleep instead of supporting and praying. Worse still, this was when Peter, when recognised as a follower of Jesus, denied that he knew him for fear of his own safety. Jesus predicted that he would be denied three times before the cock crows in the morning.

The craft activities involved decorating cockerels with wonderful vivid colours. Also pictures of the disciples sleeping were decorated. Thirdly, Prayer cards were made to reflect the reasons why Jesus wanted to pray and why we should pray. There were also some very decorative small gardens made with plants and moss and the older members together made a larger garden including rocks to make a tombe and small crosses, all symbolising the story to come.

Jim told the story of Gethsemane illustrated by the children with the sound of cockerels and the sound of sleeping.
